MCI UUNet | G-Layer / GSL Marketing Profile: In late 2004, at a time when the connectivity market was one of the fastest growing industries in the world, MCI UUNet (now a holding of Verizon) and Future Beta collaborated to offer the fastest possible internet connection; G-Layer. As a single-hop low latency network that would allow access through GSL connections, this was essentially creating "the world's largest LAN network." The mere concept of G-Layer lowered global latency by 9ms and to this day influences internet topology.
One of our proudest accomplishments, this highly anticipated product would attract the "Who's Who" of digital companies. Signing Microsoft's IPTV as our first of a long list of clients, G-Layer would launch not only profitable, but repaying its initial costs monthly before we marketed the retail product GSL.
At this time, we were simultaneously launching a chain of LanLabs Gaming Facilities to build on the great success of our 10,000 sq. ft. Lower East Side NY Location. Housed within this facility was our coffee shop Alchemy, 150 networked computers, a gourmet restaurant, and all of it was specially designed as one co-location entity. This project would change connectivity as we know it, media as it was and still is, server rentals, and even coffee shops.
Sadly we did our job to well.. A few months after the deal was solidified, Verizon purchased UUNet for $6.7b and shelved our contracts under loosely fitting legal precedence, and in doing so robbed the world of global low latency connectivity.
Nonetheless, FBi is proud to have been a part of this, proud of our accomplishment, and proud to have achieved such confidence and notoriety from a global leader in connectivity. We still developed, pioneered, and marketed the idea to profitability prior to the launch.
